🌊🐟 Caicai Vilu looks after the oceans, seas, all of the marine creatures and controls tsunamis and flooding.

Long ago, there were two enormous snakes, Trentren Vilu and Caicai Vilu. One day, Caicai Vilu slithered onto the land, drowning valleys and fields, and destroying the homes of all the land animals. Trentren Vilu quickly confronted Caicai Vilu.

Trentren tried to save the land by raising it out of the water. The battle between the two giant serpents lasted a very long time.

Finally, Trentren Vilu was victorious, but the land was too damaged; Trentren Vilu was unable to return it to its original form. The land Caicai Vilu attacked became permanently separated from the mainland, and now we know it as the Chiloé Archipelago in the South of Chile.

And this is why the people of the Chiloé Archipelago have a very different way of life to those on the mainland. For them, the sea holds much greater importance in their lives, and they have their own unique foods and buildings.
